Acceptable Use Policy
1. Introduction
Welcome to our open Wi-Fi network (“the Network”). By using the Network, you agree to comply
with this Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). This policy is designed to ensure a safe, legal, and
enjoyable experience for all users.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all persons visiting the IMI campus or Residence who wish to use the open
Wi-Fi network.
3. Responsibilities
The Head of IT and Transformation is responsible for the implementation of this policy.
The Director of Finance & Transformation is accountable for the implementation of this policy.
4. Policy Requirements
4.1 Consent to use of personal data
By accessing the Network you consent to the use of your personal data for legitimate purposes
outlined in the IMI privacy policies at https://www.imi.ie/privacy-policy/ and for the purpose of
monitoring and reporting of Prohibited Activities.
4.2 Prohibited Activities
Users must not engage in any activities that are illegal, harmful, or disruptive, including but not
limited to:
• Illegal Activities: Engaging in any activity that violates local, state, national, or
international laws.
• Harmful Activities: Distributing viruses, malware, or any other harmful software.
• Disruptive Activities: Interfering with the network’s operation or other users’ ability to
use the network.
4.3 Security
Users are responsible for ensuring the security of their devices and data. This includes:
• Using up-to-date antivirus software.
• Avoiding the transmission of sensitive information over the network.
• Reporting any security breaches or suspicious activities to the network administrator.
4.4 Privacy
While we strive to protect users’ privacy, we cannot guarantee the security of data transmitted
over the network. Users should be aware that:
• Data transmitted over the network may be monitored for security and maintenance
purposes.
• Personal information should not be transmitted over the network unless encrypted.
4.5 Bandwidth Usage
To ensure fair access for all users, excessive bandwidth usage is prohibited. This includes:
• Downloading or uploading large files that may impact network performance.
• Streaming high-definition video or other bandwidth-intensive activities.
5. Enforcement
Violation of this AUP may result in:
• Temporary or permanent suspension of network access.
• Reporting of illegal activities to the appropriate authorities.
6. Changes to Policy
We reserve the right to modify this AUP at any time. Users will be notified of any changes
through appropriate channels.
